Your mental toughness routine for 2008

Posted on January 4th, 2008 in Uncategorized by willie

Golf should always be something your passionate about and fun. The moment, it is neither, give it up and do something else. We all play golf for different reasons, some of us like the internal challenges that it give us, while other are their because they get satisfaction from being in a group. This are all valid reason for us to play the game that we really love. Let’s not forget we are also TIME POOR GOLFERS, we also have to walk the dog, take out the garbage and all the other little things that needs to be done. So for 2008, let’s seek to get a balance, our work, our home, our other commitments and our golf. This year will be making video clips of our mental toughness routines,

The Helix of Mental Toughness

Posted on December 17th, 2007 in Uncategorized by willie

I have called this article The Helix of Mental Toughness, because of the way we tend to drift from one side of the argument to the other. You will read this statement today and say ‘ yes that makes sense’ and 2 weeks from now reading the same statement and it totally makes no sense. Understand, that in communication, we can have a content message, when we in a content frame of mind and like 2 weeks from now, after a group outing, all the content based, just does not make sense.
Now you will understand that all your thoughts, self talk, focus and imagery, can move from one side of the spectrum to the other.
So here is a call to arms, when this self-depreciating thoughts, confidence eroding self talk, uncontrollable focus, rears it’s ugly head you do not have to jump to the other side of the fence,
just pull yourself to the middle ground.
Breath and let it go
I release you,
I am in the here and now.

No Fear oh yeah

My favorite book on mental toughness is the book "Thick Face Black Heart", by Chin-Ning Chu.

So can I clarify if you fear anything, you will say No fear
OK I agree with you, we all have NO FEAR, when things are going well,
When things are NOT GOING WELL, that’s a different story,
and things get worse, when an older member of the foursome starts to give you swing advice,
Thinking that just because he is older gives him, automatic rights to be your swing coach,
I have see golf clubs flying all over the place when unsolicited advice are given,
So rather then tell him, shut the puck up, you take it out on the club,

So mental toughness acolyte’s
Here are options
1. Say you appreciate his friend ship more then his golf swing coaching,
2. Kindly and firmly ask him to let it go
3. If your not someone that can tell other go jump, just turn and walk away
4. Change the topic of conversation

Change State,

Posted on October 29th, 2007 in Uncategorized by willie

Being mentally tough is about being focused on the end result and not let the small wayward shots throw you off balance. To play the best that you can do, means having the ability, to let issues that do not contribute to you playing your best. most times we say to ourselves yeh yeh i know that, I say do we really know, or are we in a hurry, because of something else.
Understand that you need to put into practice, the ability to change state,
use some of this phrase

I am better then this wayward shot and I let it go,
Focused on the big picture and don’t sweat this small shots
breath in and let that shot go

so link this phrases with some psychical action
The one I use is I externalize the bad shot, ie lick my index finger and do a throwing motion away from me.
So that by the 4 step, I have let go of the wayward shot.
I release this wayward shot into the abyss and I’m free

Holistic Golf Remedial Training:

a). 50% shots are straight, 60-80% of the remaining shots are hooks  score under 90

one in every 3 shots is a hook and in some of your games you will break a 85.

Your options

  • Slow your swing down so that your swing and your hands are in sync, your not turning to fast and have weak hands.
  • Another way to go is the opposite of your slice. Start with a normal address and then turn your back to the target area; you should be now perpendicular to target line. This will work your hands more and give you a right to left shot
  • Work with all your irons and 3-5 wood, your slice has infected all your shots
  • Divided the balls up into 2 piles, eg if you have 50 balls split into a 40-10 pile
  • 4 golf swing (normal), 1 with full preshot routine.
  • At home, if you have the space use the same set up, preshot routine, foot aliment,
  • To make any change to your score, you need to be training minimum 3 times per week, 1 at the driving range and 2 at home.
  •  Putting – this is a must when ever your at the driving range, practice from 1 club length, when you have mastered this you will only need 2 putts, so the 1st putt bring as close as possible to the 1 club length from the flag.
  • At home work on you’re putting in between your movie or whatever, fit in a putting, of at least 5-6 shots, do this every time there is a commercial break and your laughing.

Fitness

Your options

  • Go to the gym and get professional help with your fitness training
  • Stay focused when going to the gym or training at home,
  • The abdominal and the lower back are of utmost importance, the sit-ups and the back extensions.
  • For you to enjoy your golf, you must have strong abdominal & lower back and good aerobic capacity.
  • Strong abdominal- nothing beats the crunch, start of with the basic one arms by your side, knees folded and the sole of both feet firmly on the floor. Lift your shoulder blades off the floor. X10, take a break and do 5 sets of thisX10
  • Next work on your oblique – lift the sole of the right foot and place on your left knee. Your right arm is resting on your abdominal and your left hand, with fingers bunched, next to you left ear and not holding your head. Bring your left elbow to your right knee. X 10 and repeat on the other side with the left sole on your right knee. Do the left and right side X3

Mentally tough golfers are Consistent

Posted on June 19th, 2007 in Uncategorized by willie

To be mentally tough in golf, you have to have to be "CONSISTENT".
This is easier said then done, right.
With one thousand and one things, competing for our TIME, it is a wonder that we been consistent, so far.
To make CONSISTENCY work for you, make the golf an enjoyable experience.
This is just for the first 21-42 days until the whole golf training process, becomes a habit, " you automatically make TIME for the golf training and practice"
During this 1st stage, it does not matter if you fall off the path, the IMPORTANT thing to remember is to pick yourself up and get back on the horse.
If you fall down once, pick yourself up once,
If you fall down 4 times pick yourself up 4 times.

Here and Now-part 2

Posted on May 31st, 2007 in Uncategorized by willie

So what does the Here and Now and Being In the Zone have to do with mental toughness??
To be in the Here and Now , you will have to learn to deal with distractions, as in letting it( what ever it is) go and just focus on your breathing.
When you do the above often enough, it will lead you to Being In the Zone.
So how does all this and golf, be used as a self transformation tool??
Letting go- as your wayward shot or putt missed the hole,
let it go, it is now in the past- with me so far
Use the same scenario at home, something is bothering you, let it go
If it is in your control to do/fix whatever that is bothering you, then fix it
If it is not in your control, then do the best that you can do in the given circumstance and let it go
